Episode 62: Double Covered & Smothered Part Duex, The Revenge

Greetings Dear Listener,

Here is the stunning conclusion to the two part episode arch started back on Episode 60.  There was no way I was not going to take a moment to acknowledge the passing of Scott Asheton so this had to be delayed.  But instead of delaying the episode, I decided just to record two this week.

The concept is rather basic.  One episode a great list of songs, the next episode those same great songs but played by other artists.

Tinariwen is playing at the Warhol Museum on Tuesday April 1st.  The show is sold out and I did not go the website for tickets in time to get them.  Damn my slowness.

The giant list of releases for Record Store Day has been released.  You can go here to read it.  There are actually a few interesting releases on it this year that aren't just reissues.

And if you thought that Ghost Rider was the worst thing you've ever seen Nicolas Cage's face on, you would be sorely mistaken.  This is a real thing:
Yes, that is a pillow case with the Treasure Protector's face on it.  And no, that is not the only one.  There is an entire series of these awful things on the Amazon:  http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_12?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=nicolas+cage+pillowcase&sprefix=nicolas+cage%2Caps%2C178

KDVR in Denver did a really stupid thing.  They were practicing lazy journalism live on air.  Which led to the greatest mistake on live television ever.  Needless to say, they got what they deserved.

Patton Oswalt has a new special coming up on Comedy Central.  Here's the trailer for it:

The Pixies have released EP3.  And they are combining all three EP's and releasing them as an album titled Indie Cindy.  There will be an advanced Record Store Day release for the vinyl with an actual street date of April 29th.  There is also a deluxe CD version that will have bonus CD with live tracks from their tour this past winter.

The City Gardens was a shit-hole of a club in Trenton, NJ.  The stage in that club has had an enormous amount of legendary bands play on it.  And the bar in that club was once tended by Jon Stewart.  There's a book out now and documentary in production about the City Gardens.  Here's a link to The Daily Show interview with the author and Gibby from the Butthole Surfers.

It seems that Iggy Pop will have a radio show on the BBC for quite some time.  Here's a source to download the most recent episode Fun Seekers.

Buzz from the Melvins will be a guest on Henry Rollins' radio show on KCRW this Sunday, the 30th.  The website that has the Iggy Pop shows will also have the Buzz show a few days after it airs.

Thanks for listening.

Episode 61: Rest In Peace Rock Action

Greetings Dear Listener,

On March 15th, 2014, we lost Scott Asheton (a.k.a. Rock Action.)  He was the drummer for The Stooges and Sonic's Rendezvous Band.

We will be slamming on the brakes from our regularly scheduled programming to pay tribute to the man that was charged with musically containing the chaos and fury that is Iggy Pop.

Here's a link to Iggy's statement on Scott's passing.

Our hearts are heavy but still full of napalm.

Thanks for listening.  And listen loud.

Episode 60: Double Covered & Smothered Part 1

Greetings Dear Listener,

Welcome to part one of a two episode jaunt.  If you study the playlist below, you may be able tell the direction in which we will be going.

The Sword came through town a few days ago.  Unfortunately I was not able to attend.  I was tasked with shepherding the next generation to training on how to wield an axe.

My copy of Heavy Blanket's Live At Tym Guitars has showed up.  No Telling No Trails is a special little treat at the end of the episode.  Here's what the artwork on the sleeve looks like:

In more J Mascis news, there will be a Dinosaur Jr. singles box set coming out for Record Store Day.  There will be 5,000 pressed so I may be able to get one.  Here's what that looks like:
The Gaslight Anthem's Fan Club single is back from the pressing plant and will start shipping in a few days.  They posted a picture of a giant pile of merch:

They are also in the studio working on their next album.  Here's a picture of Brian Fallon at work:

There will be a 2LP soundtrack release for Breaking Bad coming out at the end of April.  To place a pre-order for it go here.  This is what it'll look like:

Seth Rogen gave testimony in front of our failed government in a plea for more funding for Alzheimer's research.  After the introductions, there weren't even a handful of senators in the room.  Weak.

In Uber-Nerdy Batman news, there will be a Batman/Green Hornet crossover.  The story will be set in the Batman '66 series and will pick up where the original crossover in the 60's Batman TV show left off.  Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman will be handling the scripts.  Ty Templeton will be drawing the story.  And Alex Ross will be painting the covers.  The stories will be available digitally in May and available in print in June.  Here's some preliminary artwork from Alex Ross:

Here's a clip from the second season of Batman to refresh your memory:

Next Tuesday, instead of a new episode of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., ABC will be airing a one hour special about the upcoming Marvel movies.  There will be in depth looks at Captain America, Guardians Of The Galaxy and Avengers 2.  What a golden age in which to be a nerd.

Thanks for listening.
