Lloyd Dobbler punched John McClane in the mouth. While filming a fight scene, John Cusack missed a beat and made contact with Bruce Willis' face. The greedy and lazy has-been chipped a tooth and through a fit. Kick-boxing is the sport of the future. And John Cusack is my hero of the week.
The Fox News white Santa/white Jesus incident has given me an endless source of amusement. The lengths that network has to go through to keep their audience is astounding. Breeding fear through ignorance is big business.
The Velvet Underground White Light/White Heat box set is out and sounds amazing. It was a bit pricey for three CD's but worth every penny.
I finally got the shipping notification for the Handsome color variant reissue. The vinyl has been pressed at the correct weight and dropped in the mail.
The Otis Redding track on the playlist may sound familiar to you. The Black Crows made a living off of covering it. It can be found on the Complete Stax/Volt Singles box set. All of the songs are in their original mono glory.
There is a Gaslight Anthem B-sides collection coming out next month. All of the songs on it were made available earlier this year on the singles box-set released by Side One Dummy. Something tells me that Side One will be milking every last penny out of the Gaslight Anthem catalogue that they have the rights to.
The Pixies have hired their new bass player. Paz Lenchatin from A Perfect Circle has taken over for the North American tour.
On Saturday, December 21st, there will be a double feature at the Hollywood Theater. The early film is SLC Punk at 7pm and Filmage at 10pm. Filmage is documentary about the Descendents and ALL. Here's a link for more information.
Will Farrell was on WTF a week or so ago to promote Anchorman 2. He told a rather sad story about dealing with the ratings board to get the movie a PG-13 rating. It was very much along the lines of violence in a movie is ok but dick jokes aren't.
Bill Hick's birthday was this past Monday. He would have been 52. His material is over 20 years old but still rings true today. Mediocrity has a firm grip on what has become "The Third Mall From The Sun." Humanity is fucked. I suggest we get used to it.
It has been a year since Newtown and nothing has been done to prevent such things from happening. Why bother trying to evolve beyond the collective 8th grade mentality this country has when everyone's busy watching Duck Dynasty or some such shit and forgetting the awful truth of their surroundings. Billions of dollars are spent every year to keep the masses docile and stupid. I guess everyone throwing their televisions out a window and pouring the booze down the drain would be too much to ask. Oh well.

Episode 53: Tasered, Stabbed And Shot For The Holidays?
Greetings Dear Listener,
I wonder if the increase in Black Friday violence was equal to the decrease in sales this year. Nothing brings out the true savagery of the North American Humanoid like a sign that says "50% Off." Getting shivved for that Beats Audio speaker thing that looks like a sex toy just doesn't seem worth it to me.
The Black Friday/Record Store Day was a total bust. The store I normally go to for those type of records didn't get anything they ordered. Which is odd because they normally get at least one of everything. Oh well. I guess I can live without that Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds live record.
To commemorate the one year anniversary of relaunching their label, Anti-Flag has posted the entire A-F Records catalogue as "name your price" on Band Camp for a limited time. I'm not sure when it ends but get over there and get to downloading.
Eel was the band chosen for the month of November in Mind Cure's singles series. They are a very noisy bunch of people.
VUM's Psychotropic Jukebox has arrived on vinyl. Holy crap, is all I have to say about that record on LP.
There is a new Minutes album coming out in January. Vinyl for Roland is available for pre-order on Band Camp. The pre-order comes with an immediate download and there are a few other EP's available for free download. I got the download this morning and was unable to listen to anything else today.
Against Me! will be in town for New Year's Eve. I'd go to the show if it wasn't going to be filled with screaming, drunken assholes.
I am starting to feel better about passing on the upcoming Pixies show in January. Their new bass player has already been sent packing. Something is amiss since none of the dates have been canceled so far. There is such a thing as a band overstaying its welcome. Regardless of how great said band was. There is no shame in hanging it up and moving on.
Am I the only person that keeps repeatedly watching Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and waiting for something to happen? The show is so underwhelming but I keep giving it a chance. It just might be more evidence that there is something wrong with me. The television does have an off button.

Episode 52: 'Tis The Season For Gobbleritos
Greetings Dear Listener,
The playlist below was not the intended batch of music I had originally planned. The playlist I had worked on for over a week seemed inadequate after having been shat upon by life for the past several days. I had given up on recording Episode 52 all together until earlier this afternoon. That's when the bile level reached maximum and I went to work on a new playlist. This is the result of feeling defeated and having lost the will to live for most of the week until I came to my senses. The original playlist may see the light of day at some point.
The Worlds Scariest Police Chases record is out. It certainly gets my vote for the most inappropriately funny record of the year. The "Jizzy Clear" color variant was aptly named.
The vinyl issue of Handsome has been delayed for the limited color LP. The records were pressed at the wrong weight and sent back to the plant. Hopefully they'll be in the mail soon.
The Rival Schools United By Fate reissue is out now and sounds incredible.
In my infinite mopiness, I watched the Man Of Steel Blu-ray. HD makes all the difference when watching the innocent citizens of Metropolis being killed by toppling buildings. Back in my day, Superman would have taken Zod out of the city to snap his neck so the citizens would have been kept out of danger. If you want to see a high quality DC Comics movie, check out the Justice League: Origins animated movie coming out early next year. There's a trailer for it on the IMDB.
I also watched the film adaptation of Jack Kerouac's On The Road. What's her face from those lame vampire movies was in it but only for a minutes so the movie wasn't ruined. On one of his many podcasts recently, Kevin Smith said: "Every generation gets the vampires they deserve." How true. Shiny vampires suck.
There was an alternate ending of Breaking Bad that will be included as an extra on the barrel shaped box set that will be released next week. The scene was an homage to the ending of the Bob Newhart Show when he woke up from a dream while next to the actress that played his wife in the previous Newhart series.
Marc Maron has a new special streaming on the Netflix. It's called Thinky Pain. He opens with a Bill Hicks story and also tells a story about going to the record store for Captain Beefheart albums. Glued to the TV was I.
At the record store this past weekend, I came across old pressings of the Velvet Underground's Loaded, Germ Free Adolescents by the X-Ray Specs and Inflammable Material by the Stiff Little Fingers. My turntable has never been so happy.
If you're ever in a band and said band breaks up, make sure someone has the multi-track masters of any recordings. You never know when someone may want to spend stupid amounts of money on a reissue.

Episode 51: One Less Giant Walks Among Us
Greetings Dear Listener,
As I'm sure you have noticed by now, the world lost Lou Reed a few weeks ago and this episode's playlist makes an attempt at honoring the man's work.
Lou's wife, Laurie Anderson, wrote an amazing tribute to her husband that described his final moments. Get yourself a box of tissues and go here to read it.
We also lost Marcia Wallace. She was the voice behind Mrs. Krabappel on The Simpsons. You may also want to check out her work on the first Bob Newhart show. She could teach us all something about comedy.
A few South Park episodes ago, the goth kids had to team up with the vampire kids to defeat the emo kids. The best line of the episode was "If you're not emo, why are you listening to Sunny Day Real Estate?" Coffee dripped from my nose on that one because I had been listening to their album Diary earlier that day. Seven was the track played on South Park and it made its way onto this playlist.
My Death records came in the mail the other day and have been in heavy rotation since.
The Bad Religion Christmas album is available now on CD and download. It's the vinyl pressing that will be out later this month. It is currently streaming on the youtubers. A portion of the proceeds will benefit a charity that aids victims of clergy molestation. The subversive irony is not lost on me.
There's a new Polar Bear Club record coming out November 19th. The band has jumped ship from Bridge Nine to Rise Records.
Dax Riggs comes back to town on December 13th. He's playing the late show at Club Cafe so get there if you can.

I've been reading Questlove's book lately. It is quite the funny bit of writing. The Roots' manager wrote footnotes that seemingly contradict Questlove's version of events. The footnotes usually start with a "That's not exactly how it happened."

Episode 50: Kareem Abdul Jabbar Is My Co-Pilot
Greetings Dear Listener,
There is a band called Death. On the Netflix, there is a documentary with the title A Band Called Death. If you have an interest in music or film, this would be a good way to spend an hour and a half of your time. Then go buy the Death records. There's the actual album and an LP of demos. The story of Death is truly astounding. They're on Drag City Records.
Last week's issue of the Pittsburgh City Paper contained their best of 2013 lists as voted on by the readers. That shit-hole known as Stage AE was voted best venue. Best how? Best ball-cupping security staff? They were gentle with my nards when they felt me up so I guess they do deserve an award. But why did they cup my balls in the first place? I'm not sure and I'm never going back to the place to find out.
Bad Religion has a Christmas album coming out towards the end of November. Yes, you read that correctly. Curiouser and curiouser I am about that one.
November 12th is shaping up to be a monstrous day for releases. Rival School's United By Fate album gets a vinyl reissue. Handsome's self-titled album sees vinyl for the first time.
And A-F Records unleashes the Worlds Scariest Police Chases album. The title of the record is very long and I can't remember it. It'll be pressed on a few different colors. One of which is being called "Jizzy Clear."
On the same day, A-F will be releasing a new White Wives single. Pressed on your choice of blue or yellow. Go here for more information on both.
Before November gets a firm grip on us all, October will die with a fiery, satanic vengeance. All of the Slayer albums released by Rick Rubin's American Recordings will be reissued on vinyl on the 29th. Rocktober like a mother-fucker, indeed. Much Satan will be hailed.
The Black Friday Record Store Day list has been released. The only thing that really stood out to me was the Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds Live at KCRW LP. But go here to see for yourself.
On the Mind Cure front, the Mud City Manglers are the band featured on October's single of the month. It comes out this Saturday so stop by the store and pick one up. Episode 49: That Is One Tan Ohioan
Greetings Dear Listener,
As someone that lives less than a half hour drive from Ohio, I have no idea how someone from there could be so orange. I also can't figure out how someone can be such an Orwellian bullshit artist. I guess some things just weren't for me to understand.
Woody Allen's new film Blue Jasmine is worth the trip to the theater. The only down side of the whole venture out of the house was the theater full of crusty, old, well-to-do, white suburbanites that wouldn't shut up during the entire movie. I guess they were so senile that they thought we were all in their living rooms and there wasn't a movie playing. That's what I get for going to a multi-plex in an upper-class neighborhood. Down with humans.
I did miss the Mind Cure dollar sale and Comicon the other weekend. Putting new gutters on my house sure did put the turd in my Saturday so much so it carried over into Sunday.
There will be an interesting event at Mind Cure this coming Friday. Jack White's Third Man Records has a touring mobile record store. It will be stopping at Mind Cure on Friday from 11am to 8pm. Go here for more details.
While you're there, pick up the September single from the subscription series. The featured band is Killer of Sheep. Pawns is the title of the song on the A-side and they covered a Half Life song for the B-side. Killer of Sheep is also recording an album over at the studio inside the Mr. Smalls facilities.
Lemuria has a single bundle up for pre-order in their web store. There's a few different options depending on how much merch you can fit in your hovel.
Garfunkel and Oates will be getting their own TV show on IFC next year. Finally, a reason to be glad 2012 wasn't the end of world and that it was nothing but fanatical bullshit spewed by half-wits.
Volume 2 of the Anti-Flag subscription series started shipping this week. The band on the B-side is All Dinosaurs. They're from Cleveland and really good at what they do.
Solarburn has a few shows in the neighborhood this month. Mostly involving Halloween type activities. If you like your metal instrumental, they're the band for you.
The Roky Erickson reissues have been treating me very well. All three albums have been getting frequent listens.
Apparently, the Pixies put out an EP last month. The title was EP-1 which leads me to believe there will be an EP-2. There was a vinyl pressing that sold out but Amazon has it for a $4 download. They'll be touring North America in 2014. There is a Pittsburgh date in January but I think I'll be staying home. The average ticket price is $60 which seems a bit pricey to me. Oh well.

Episode 48: My Musical Itch Has Been Scratched
Greetings Dear Listener,
My musical itch has certainly been scratched to the point of bleeding and is now down to the bone. Two nights of the Gaslight Anthem, True Widow, The Clash box set and Roky Erickson reissues. The past few weeks have been very good for the ears.
I would try to use some of this space to write a review of the two Gaslight Anthem shows but I have too much of an emotional attachment to that band to be impartial. And that is one of the powers that music has. It can cause you to develop a bond with it that can take you back to a place in time and stir up emotions that you haven't felt in years. The Gaslight Anthem is one of those bands for me. So much so that I have to prevent myself from listening to them from time to time. They were amazing on both nights and that's all I've been able to say on the matter.
The band has come up with a rather humorous response for when some drunk-tard in the audience forgets what band they came to see and starts yelling for a song by some other band from New Jersey. They play a song by a different band from New Jersey. That band hails from Lodi, NJ. And that band is known as The Misfits. I'll take Astro Zombies over No Surrender any time.
It was brain altering to hear True Widow play through an actual PA. When they were in Pittsburgh in 2011, they played in a venue that had a PA smaller than my stereo system. After getting parked, I was walking down the street toward 123 Pleasant St. I suddenly heard a song that was vaguely familiar. The sound I had heard was True Widow's soundcheck spilling out onto the street. I had forgotten that I was across state lines where live music doesn't have to be hidden away by archaic liquor laws that somehow have an effect on how music is treated.
The few minutes of soundcheck that I caught were enough to let me know it was worth the hour and a half drive to see the band play. They politely suffered my fanboy moment and signed the LP that I brought with me. They were surprised to see that I brought their first record and wondered where I got it from. Apparently supplies of their self-titled vinyl have dried up. According to Slim the drummer, they will be doing another pressing on cream colored vinyl.
They opened with Sunday Driver which was the song I most wanted to hear them play but didn't think they would. After that their entire set was an hour long daze of moody, downer goodness.
The Clash's Sound System box set has arrived and was worth every dollar that Sony charged for the thing. Mick Jones did a wonderful job of mixing and mastering. I am still wading through it and am impressed every time I put on a new disc.
Three Roky Erickson albums have been reissued by Light In The Attic. The Evil One, Don't Slander Me and Gremlins Have Pictures are available now and sound better than ever.
All of the Slayer records that were released by American Recordings will get a vinyl reissue on October 29th. The thought of hearing God Hates Us All on 180g vinyl has me drooling with anticipation.
VUM has successfully raised the necessary funds to press their new album on vinyl. Psychotropic Jukebox will be available for download in October and the vinyl should be done in November. I've got test pressings coming my way and can't wait to hear them.
There is a Riot Grrl art exhibit over at Carnegie Mellon University. Go check it out to see what happened when people got tired of the stupidity and sexism that was once prevalent in punk rock. Go here for more information. The name of the exhibit is Alien She. That was also the title of a Bikini Kill song.
The Pittsburgh Comicon is this weekend. So if you finished your replica Iron-Man armor made of old Kleenex boxes and spray paint go give it a field test.
Mind Cure is also having a dollar sale on Saturday so they can make some space. While you're there be sure to pick up September's single of the month. Killer of Sheep is this month's band and they do not disappoint.
As Halloween approaches, I found it very strange while walking through Target and I saw a toy crowbar with a DC Comics/Justice League tag on it. For those who are not up on their Bat-History, the Joker once used a crowbar to beat the second Robin to death. I couldn't help but stand there and laugh at the different costume ideas that came to mind. Either dress up like the Joker winding up to swing with the crowbar or dress up like Robin with the crowbar attached to the side of the head.
I recently discovered why good old-fashioned American intolerance and bigotry should not be eradicated. Without it, what would we laugh at? To find out what I'm talking about type the words "Jihawg" and "Ammo" into your googler and let the laughing commence. People am dumb.

Episode 47: Shine Up Those Dancing Shoes
Greetings Dear Listener,
I went into the grocery store the other day only to find myself assaulted by displays of Halloween candy. I say fuck these dingbats and their fun-sized Zag-Nut bars. Let's get the commercialism out of Halloween and get back to it's true meaning: worshipping Satan. If you're going to have an imaginary friend, it may as well be the one with the cool records.
The Gaslight Anthem will be in town for two shows tomorrow and Friday. What a two days it will be.
The Super-Friends turned 40 over this past weekend. So sit back and watch a show that certainly did not hold up over time.
The Dave Chappelle/Flight of The Conchords show was a good time except for the large drunk girl screaming "Go Steelers" during Dave's set. Stupid humans. No more large venue shows for me.
Speaking of the Steelers and stupid humans, we dedicate the Aus-Rotten track from this episode to a certain dopey quarterback that can't figure out that "No" means "No."

Born Without A Face was a band from Grand Rapids, MI in the mid-80's. They recently reissued their catalogue as a box set. The vinyl is limited to 300 and there is a download on Bandcamp.
There's another new VUM track from Psychotropic Jukebox on the program, as well. Their Indie-go-go campaign is still up and running but may fall short. You can go here for more information.

I went into the grocery store the other day only to find myself assaulted by displays of Halloween candy. I say fuck these dingbats and their fun-sized Zag-Nut bars. Let's get the commercialism out of Halloween and get back to it's true meaning: worshipping Satan. If you're going to have an imaginary friend, it may as well be the one with the cool records.
The Gaslight Anthem will be in town for two shows tomorrow and Friday. What a two days it will be.
The Super-Friends turned 40 over this past weekend. So sit back and watch a show that certainly did not hold up over time.
The Dave Chappelle/Flight of The Conchords show was a good time except for the large drunk girl screaming "Go Steelers" during Dave's set. Stupid humans. No more large venue shows for me.
Speaking of the Steelers and stupid humans, we dedicate the Aus-Rotten track from this episode to a certain dopey quarterback that can't figure out that "No" means "No."

Episode 46: At Least They Didn't Cast Ryan Reynolds
Greetings Dear Listener,
For those despairing the choice of Ben Affleck as the next Batman, it could always be worse. I'll watch Argo again to try to see if I can imagine him wearing the cowl.
September is shaping up to quite a month for releases. The Clash, Horrible Crowes, Far, Rise Against and Nirvana all have releases or reissues set for next month.
September will also have shows from the Gaslight Anthem and True Widow in the Tri-State. A good time will be had by all.
And speaking of the Gaslight Anthem the short film they worked on is now streaming on the youtubes. Every Word Handwritten follows the journey of a single record as it is transferred from owner to owner over the years.
Flight of the Conchords will be in town on Friday with Dave Chapelle. Guts will be busted.
My recent Dischord order came in the mail today. In the near future we will roll out The Julie Ruin, Roomrunner, Bells and a Jawbox reissue. It will be a good weekend for the ears.
Handsome's self-titled LP will finally be getting a vinyl pressing after about 15 years. Shop Radio Cast will be handling the pressing duties. There will be a few different colors and it comes with a bonus 7" that has two tracks that were not previously available in the U.S. Giddy with anticipation am I.
Someone was kind enough to post Greg Graffin's long out of print solo effort American Lesion in a streaming format. That record is a missing chapter for most Bad Religion fans. There are a few audio issues with it but it's better than nothing. Once I turn it into mp3s we will certainly get into that.
As we are approaching the last Saturday of the month, be sure to head over to Mind Cure Records for the August single of the month. I'm not sure who the band is but does it really matter?
For those who may be interested, Marc Maron has interviewed a rather interesting group of musicians of late. He sat down with Iggy Pop, Nick Cave and Meynard James Keenan recently on his WTF podcast. Go here to check it out: WTF.

Episode 45: Tread Lightly

The Beastie Boys' "Awesome, I Fucking Shot That" played at the theater up the street from me a few days ago. It's sad that that was the closest I will ever come to seeing that band live. The DVD is readily available for your viewing pleasure. My only suggestion when watching is to turn the volume up to house crumbling levels.
Sesame Street posted a rather humorous segment to the youtubes. In anticipation of the new season of Sons of Anarchy starting on September 10th, here's the Sons of Poetry:
Upon first listen to the reissue of Real Enemy's "Life With The Enemy," I was surprised to hear a song I was rather familiar with. We have a Try To Live sandwich for this episode. We start with Real Enemy's version and close with Submachine's cover of it from "Fresh Out Of Give-A-Fucks."
I stopped into Mind Cure a few days ago and came across a few incredible finds in the used bin. I am now the proud owner of a promo copy of Empire's "Expensive Sounds" album. It's scratchy but plays all the way through. The store also had the limited pressing of Iceage's first album "New Brigade." There were only 500 pressed and it's got bonus tracks.
I also picked up the Birthday Party Reissues and the Mind Cure subscription series single for July. The band for July is called Carousel and they've got a Thin Lizzy vibe to them. Evidence of that being the Thin Lizzy cover on the b-side.
If you are a fan of the 1966 Batman television series starring Adam West, DC Comics has started a new digital comic book based on the show. After a few digital issues stack up, DC prints them as one paper issue for those of us that prefer to turn pages instead of swipe screens. Issue #1 is on stands now.
DC is doing the same with Batman Beyond, the futuristic take on a new Batman and an old Bruce Wayne. The writer starting the series is Kyle Higgins so it's going to be good.

Episode 44: Go. Be Wild And Free. Just Don't Be Me
Greetings Dear Listener,
The Bosnian Rainbows show a few weeks ago was amazing. Teri Gender Bender can eat an audience alive. The band was able to handle the awful sound in the venue without a problem. Hopefully, she will reconvene Le Butcherettes in the near future.
Circumambulation from True Widow is officially out now. If anyone cared what I would pick as album of the year, this would be it. It lands between their previous record and their first in terms of accessibility and ease on the ears.
The two major Far releases are getting the vinyl treatment for the first time. Tin Cans With Strings To You and Water & Solutions were released during that dark period known as the mid-90s where records were only released on CD. The pre-order for both goes up on August 1st through Shop Radio Cast.

The first installment of the Anti-Flag 20 Years Of Hell subscription series has arrived. The reworked songs are certainly an improvement on the original versions.
The Gaslight Anthem fan club single finally came in the mail. It took them almost a year to get it done but it was worth the wait. The band finished a three night run in New York City and apparently there have been some issues with the crowds while touring. Here's a link to a post from Brian Fallon: Tonight You Have Broken My Heart. Some people just don't know how to live in the moment.
There's a new Pussy Riot video that went up a few weeks ago. It sounds like someone's been practicing. It's called Like A Red Prison and here it is:
The second release of the Mind Cure Records series is out now as well. Go here for more information: Mind Cure Records. Then go to the store and buy it.
Rise Against will be releasing a collection of b-sides called Long Forgotten Songs. There are a few different pre-order packages available at Rise Against.com. It comes out on September 10th.
Nirvana's In Utero is getting the super deluxe 20th anniversary treatment. There will be a few different versions released. Hopefully they don't try to use the Steve Albini mixes as a selling point. If you need a guy that can fuck up a record Steve Albini is your man. The release date is set for September 24th as of now.
The Evens will be heading out for another short tour. This time to the New England area. Tour dates can be found here: Dischord. If they'll be in your neck of the woods, do your ears a favor and go.

The Bosnian Rainbows show a few weeks ago was amazing. Teri Gender Bender can eat an audience alive. The band was able to handle the awful sound in the venue without a problem. Hopefully, she will reconvene Le Butcherettes in the near future.
Circumambulation from True Widow is officially out now. If anyone cared what I would pick as album of the year, this would be it. It lands between their previous record and their first in terms of accessibility and ease on the ears.
The two major Far releases are getting the vinyl treatment for the first time. Tin Cans With Strings To You and Water & Solutions were released during that dark period known as the mid-90s where records were only released on CD. The pre-order for both goes up on August 1st through Shop Radio Cast.

The first installment of the Anti-Flag 20 Years Of Hell subscription series has arrived. The reworked songs are certainly an improvement on the original versions.
The Gaslight Anthem fan club single finally came in the mail. It took them almost a year to get it done but it was worth the wait. The band finished a three night run in New York City and apparently there have been some issues with the crowds while touring. Here's a link to a post from Brian Fallon: Tonight You Have Broken My Heart. Some people just don't know how to live in the moment.
There's a new Pussy Riot video that went up a few weeks ago. It sounds like someone's been practicing. It's called Like A Red Prison and here it is:
The second release of the Mind Cure Records series is out now as well. Go here for more information: Mind Cure Records. Then go to the store and buy it.
Rise Against will be releasing a collection of b-sides called Long Forgotten Songs. There are a few different pre-order packages available at Rise Against.com. It comes out on September 10th.
Nirvana's In Utero is getting the super deluxe 20th anniversary treatment. There will be a few different versions released. Hopefully they don't try to use the Steve Albini mixes as a selling point. If you need a guy that can fuck up a record Steve Albini is your man. The release date is set for September 24th as of now.
The Evens will be heading out for another short tour. This time to the New England area. Tour dates can be found here: Dischord. If they'll be in your neck of the woods, do your ears a favor and go.

Episode 43: Sink, Florida, Sink
Greetings Dear Listener,
It has certainly been an awful few weeks for people who like to think and have a sense of right. The Bastards seem to be winning and Rome is being incinerated at a rapid pace.
What better way to try to keep our spirits up than ripping through twenty-five tracks of goodness.
We've got brand new True Widow on the program. Circumambulation comes out on the 23rd so go buy it. If you want a preview of the sweet aural that the record is, go over to the Pitchfork website where it's streaming. Then go to the Relapse Records website to order it. My only complaint is that I can't get the volume high enough while listening to it.
True Widow is touring this fall so go see them if you can. They're not coming to Pittsburgh on this leg but hopefully they'll come through town in the near future.
The Zeitgeist song comes from the Mind Cure Records subscription series which is available at the store at the end of every month. The band also has an ep for free download on Band Camp.
High on Fire has a two volume live record out now. Spitting Fire Live Vol. 1 is where we get the version of Fertile Green for this episode.
I drove down to Morgantown, WV to see The Evens a few weeks ago. Seeing them twice in one week has done wonders to lift the spirit. Here's a picture from the show that I took:
The show was at 119 Pleasant St. It's an empty storefront next to the club 123 Pleasant St. There were absolutely no amenities in the place and it worked very well as a venue.
Against Me! has offered two new songs for a free download on their website. Sign up for their email list and they send you a link to download the tracks. I haven't had a chance to listen to them yet but I will remedy that shortly.
Far's two major releases will get the vinyl reissue treatment from Shop Radio Cast. Water & Solutions and Tin Cans With Strings To You have gotten to the test pressing stage. If all goes well, they will be released in late August, so they say.
The Bosnian Rainbows will be in town on Saturday. They're playing at the Altar Bar which is not the best sounding venue I've ever been to. Something tells me they'll be able to power through it. I can't wait to see that band.

Episode 42: Life, The Universe And Everything
Greetings Dear Listener,
It has been a wonderful week of live music that was seriously needed to cleanse the palette from the rotten eggs laid by Flag and the Japandroids.
Last Thursday, The Evens played an amazing hour of music and they'll be doing it again tomorrow night in Morgantown, WV. They'll be playing at 119 Pleasant St. Down the interstate I will go. To see The Evens twice in a week is an opportunity not to be missed.
Dax Riggs played this past Tuesday. He's playing an acoustic set accompanied by a bass player. He opened the set with Louis Armstrong's What A Wonderful World. I was mistaken to think that song couldn't get any better.
The White Wives have a new live EP available for free download. Here's the link to get to it:

Yesterday, I went to Mind Cure Records. The store has been open for about three years and I only heard of it last week. That's how in the know I am. It's a tiny store specializing in the punk rock and what not. It was very reminiscent of Brave New World/Wicked Discs. To the point where some of the used records came from Brave New World. There were a few that still had the stickers Robbie would write up to draw attention to certain records.
I picked up bootlegs by The Clash and Generation X as well as 12-inch singles from the Beastie Boys, among many other things. I will certainly be bringing some of the new finds to you once I get them digitized.
Mind Cure is also starting a 7-inch subscription series. They'll be producing a single by a local band every month. The A-side is an original by the band and the B-side is a cover of their choice.
The store is in the same building as a coffee shop and a comic book store. It is a big building of awesome and something tells me I will be spending a lot of time there.
The Pixies released a new song this week. They also announced that they have a new bass player for their European tour. Does that mean there will be a new record? I sure hope so.

OFF! will be releasing a live album that was recorded at the 9:30 Club. It'll be released by Outer Battery Records in August. There are only going to 1,000 copies pressed and they have sold through their run of them. The Shop Radio Cast website seems to still be taking pre-orders.
If you're looking for a hero this week, try looking up Texas State Senator Wendy Davis. She filibustered for thirteen hours to avoid the passing of a bill that would have shut down the majority of the Planned Parenthood facilities in her state. There are a multitude of reasons that her bravery should be admired. The entire story surrounding her actions (and the actions of those who tried to silence her) reads like a script written by Aaron Sorkin.

Episode 41: Flag Should Have Been Waved In Surrender
Greetings Dear Listener,
As I type this, I am listening to the Bosnian Rainbows self-titled album. It is currently streaming on the NPR website and so far it has yet to disappoint. It comes out on Tuesday June 25th.
"The Distance Is So Big" from Lemuria came out this week. It's been my first listen in the morning while I rot away at day job. Paint The Youth is my favorite track off of it so far and that's the song we hear on the podcast.
Lemuria's Bridge Nine label mates, Boysetsfire, released "While A Nation Sleeps..." last week. It's their first album in about seven years and they didn't miss a beat.
The Beach Boys and David Bowie tracks come from Wes Anderson movie soundtracks. Whether you like his movies or not, they sure do have some pretty mean soundtracks.
We get into some Record Store Day leftovers with the At The Drive-In, Best Coast and Whirr tracks. I had to hunt those down elsewhere because I couldn't come up with them locally. And I'm still trying to find the South Park picture disc at a reasonable price.
In honor of Lou Reed's new liver, we'll listen to a Velvet Underground track. We wish you a speedy recovery, sir.
I bit the Boris bullet and grabbed the "Praparat" vinyl off of the Discogs. It cost me a kidney and a retina but damn is it worth every brain splitting minute.
While trolling the Discogs, I came across the former proprietor of Wicked Discs. She had a stack of Boris records that I did not have. Now I have them and she does not. Capitalism in action, hooray. Once I get them digitized, we will dig deep into those. The "Vein" clear promo test pressing was among the stack. That record left burn marks on my ears. And it plays cleanly all the way through. That was why the clear vinyl was abandoned. Bubbles developed in the pressing process and made the record skip.
The Ramones track of the show comes from a bootleg of a 1982 show in New York. Richie Ramone is the drummer on this bootleg. This was when their sets somehow got to be two minutes faster.
The Flag show a few weeks go was not so good. The best part of the evening was Killer Of Sheep. They're local and have an EP available. Track down "Out Of Time" if you can. They also have a few other songs posted on the internets.
Anti-Flag has started a 7-inch subscription series. They re-recorded a handful of songs from their back catalogue to correct and update them. The a-side will be the new renditions and the b-sides will be songs from other bands. Folks who sign up for the series will be entered into contests for various prizes and all kinds of other goodies.
In September, there will be a comprehensive Clash box set released. This will supposedly contain everything under the sun and a DVD or two. It will be shaped like a boombox as well. Something tells me that this will be worth owning.
Dax Riggs come through town on July 2nd so expect the next episode to be Dax-centric.

Episode 40: Won't You Be My Neighbor?
Greetings Dear Listener,
Dean Venture is my Emo hero. The Venture Bros. season premier was the finest hour of television I've seen in months.
This podcast is now 40 episodes old. We celebrate with a heavy dose of music from the Pittsburgh area. If you like production value in your music, this one will be hard to swallow. I did my best to level things out for the best sound but some of the tracks were a little too rough around the edges.
Most of these bands aren't around anymore so a lot of these songs are a slice of my youth and better days. So I would think.
The Anti-Flag anniversary shows were last week and they knocked them out of the park each night. Well done, sirs.
Worlds Scariest Police Chases were the best opener on the first night. They were a lot of fun to watch.
Lemuria proved that they were a bad ass band on the second night. It was the first time I had a chance to see them play and they were phenomenal. Their new record comes out on June 18th and I'm twitching like an addict to hear it.
Here's your "Holy Crap, There's Actually Something To Do Around Here" update:
Keith Morris and Chuck Dukowski come to town on Friday with their band, Flag. I hope this show will be worth the exorbitant "convenience" fees that Ticketbastard is charging these days.
Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes will be in town at the Oaks Theatre for a showing of "Jay & Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie." There will be a Q&A/podcast recording after the movie. From the looks of the Oaks' website, the event is sold out. I guess I'll have to laugh at my own dick jokes on Sunday. Which doesn't seem to be very different from any other Sunday.
White Wives will be playing a free show on Monday, June 10th at the Commonwealth Press warehouse. The band will be playing Greenday's "Dookie" record. In my humble opinion, that was an appropriate title for that record but the White Wives and Commonwealth Press are worth supporting regardless of how awful Greenday is.
The Japandroids will be here on June 16th. Don't get your dad another tie that he'll never wear. Take him to see the Japandroids. Nothing says "I love you, Pops" like guitar driven Canadian hipster rock.
Solarburn will be at the 31st Street Pub on June 22nd. Local instrumental metal does the body good.
Dax Riggs will be coming through town on July 2nd. If you can't make that show, he'll be in Cleveland at the Grog Shop on July 4th. I may have to go to both shows. He's that good. And I'm that big of a fanboy. If he's touring, I hope there will be new music from him soon.
Bosnian Rainbows will be here on July 20th. They're at a venue with awful sound. Which does not bode well for a band with that much texture.
If you haven't been watching Marc Maron's show on IFC, you are doing yourself a great disservice. Bobcat Goldthwaite is the director on the show. Who'd a thunk it?

Episode 39: F. Scott Must Be Dizzy From All Of That Grave Spinning
Greetings Dear Listener,
When thinking of music from the 1920's, how is Jay-Z the first person that comes to mind? Fuck Baz Luhrman or however you spell his name. I am certain the world ended in 2012 and no on told us. Shitting all over The Great Gatsby is more proof that we all died and went to whatever you consider your Hell to be. I didn't know that despair and longing could swing across a movie screen in 3-D like they were Spider-Man.
But enough about the bastardization of our culture. Let's celebrate it with 25 tracks of musical wonderment.
Fred Armisen, of Saturday Night Live and Portlandia, has developed a character named Ian Rubbish. The premise of the character is a punk rocker that writes songs about how much he likes Margaret Thatcher. There are four songs posted as a free download on the Ian Rubbish & The Bizzaros website. The songs are really funny and really good. There is a very obvious Clash influence.

There is a new Boris record out and very difficult to track down. Praparat was not released domestically on vinyl or CD and the import prices are insanely high. The few tracks I have heard were brain melting.

Episode 38: It Is A Sad, Emo Day In Hell
Greetings Dear Listener,
Satan rolled a tear this week when we lost Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman. In this episode, we pay tribute to this great six string samurai. He will be missed.
The playlist is chalk full of Record Store Day finds from a few weeks ago. I'm still waiting for the on-line prices to come down to pick up the few things I missed.
Ready To Die by Iggy & The Stooges is officially out. We let rip with the title track. The record is different but a good different.
The Roky Erickson track you'll hear is the b-side from the Mine Mine Mind single released by Light In The Attic Records. From what the was written on the sleeve, they will be working with Roky to re-release some of his back catalogue. I am suffering from sweaty-palmed anticipation.
There are a great many happenings over at Dischord. They are releasing an eight song album titled Nites of Midnite by the band Red Hare that was produced by J Robbins. The pre-order is up now for a May 21st vinyl release and you'll also get an immediate download. It's been a while since Dischord has released something that sounds like this. It has merited multiple listens over the past few days.
The Fugazi Live Series is in full swing and they have added a handful of Pittsburgh shows. There's something extra special about hearing the recording of a show you attended. At least there is for me. The search functions on the site allow you to search by city so go download a show from your town.
Dischord is also distributing a new photo book by Lucian Perkins. It's titled Hard Art, D.C. 1979. The book contains pictures taken by Lucian during the early days of the DC music scene and also has essays by Henry Rollins and Alec MacKaye.

Episode 37: Atomic Batteries To Power, Turbines To Speed
Greetings Dear Listener,
I hope your Record Store Day was as bountiful as mine. The only thing on my list that I didn't get was the South Park single. I'm not sure what was on it but I'm sure it was gut busting.
The Miles Davis mono reissues were pressed beautifully. The quality of them surpasses the Hendrix reissues by leaps and bounds. Once I get them digitized, we will certainly get into those.
All of the 45's I picked up last weekend have been put onto the hard drive so we'll get a heavy dose of Record Store Day spoils next time around.
The Stooges new album, Ready To Die, is streaming over at the NPR website. I have listened repeatedly and can't wait until the vinyl comes in the mail.

I did pick up tickets for Flag. The show is at a shitty venue that uses Ticketasshole to distribute their tickets. Their "convenience" charges are now almost ten dollars a ticket. Assholes indeed. But it's Keith Morris and Chuck Dukowski so it's worth it.
The Gaslight Anthem show in Pittsburgh that was supposed to be in June has now been postponed until September and a second show has been added. Patience is a virtue so I've been told.
Deerhoof played a few Friday's ago. The sound they made with a stripped down set up was amazing. And it was in a small room without a bar so the disturbances were minimal.
We lost Richie Havens this week. He was the first act to play at Woodstock back in 1969. He was a giant and will be missed.
Patton Oswalt was on a recent episode of Parks & Recreation. Here's an outtake from the filming:

Episode 36: Have You Seen Mike Hunt?
Greetings Dear Listener,
This installment is chalk full of new music that I picked up over the past few days. I made a preemptive strike on a record store or two before Record Store Day. The list is expansive but underwhelming this year.

I'll still venture out to the midnight madness to witness the festivities.
I was able to procure the Deerhoof "Breakup Song" flexi-book and the Stooges Funhouse sessions box set. We sample the bonus track from the flexi-book this time around and next time we'll get into some alternate takes from Funhouse.
Deerhoof will be coming through Pittsburgh this week. They'll be playing at the Andy Warhol Museum on April 12th. Get there if you can.
Forgetters came through town a few weeks ago and they laid it down so we'll hear a track from them.
Found from Rival Schools came out this week. That was the unreleased album that they recorded back in 2003 or so. Chris Traynor from Orange 9mm and Helmet played on those sessions so we get to add some Orange 9mm to our diets too.
The White Wives had a record release party for their new EP Howls For Sade. The event was held at the warehouse/workspace for Commonwealth Press. To say a good time was had by all would be an understatement.

We changed up the intro music in honor of Jane Henson, the wife of the late Muppets creator Jim Henson. She passed away a few days ago. We lost a great one and her husband is still sorely missed.

The good news--Side One Dummy will be releasing a singles box set from the band's time on the label. It's seven or eight 45's in a wooden box. There will be 2,500 pressed in black and 500 in "blood" red only available from Side One's website.
The bad news--The second show booked in Pittsburgh for June 11th has been cancelled for some reason. As far as I can tell, the show for June 12th is still on.
The reformed version of Black Flag known as Flag will be bringing their sonic airstrike to Pittsburgh on June 7th. This is the band with Keith Morris, Chuck Dukowski, Bill Stevenson, Dez Cadena and Steve Egerton. I have yet to find out who will be opening but it is at a shit hole of a venue. Tickets are on sale this weekend. I guess all boycotts come to an end eventually.

Episode 35: Harry, Where Did Your Balls Roll Off To?
Greetings Dear Listener,
We begin this installment with a letter written by Tomas Young. He is a veteran of the Iraq War which is now in its 10th year. The experiment in unbridled Friedmanism was a total failure and all of the guilty parties still breathe free air. Bullshit of the highest order I say.

Be sure to check out the documentary Body Of War. Tomas Young is the focus of it. It is not an easy film to watch.
The Rival Schools "Found" album has started shipping from the label. It should be in my ears by the end of the week. We will certainly get into heavy doses of this one as the weeks go by.
Burn is the first track from Ready To Die that has been made available by Iggy & The Stooges. It is because of this track that I am cautiously optimistic about the album. April 30th can't get here fast enough.
