Episode 28: Christmocalypse Now

Greetings Dear Listener,

The Christmas season has its boot firmly about our necks with no chance of relenting until well after Boxing Day.  And even then it never truly lets go.

This time around, the program is intended to lighten the mood and add a bit of humor given the circumstances of last week.

If this show is still around next year, I have no idea what I'll do.  I used every Christmas song that I've got.  Maybe I'll go with the ultimate Slayer mix tape.

If anyone out there is a fan of Batman and/or Kevin Smith (the guy that did Clerks), type "Fat Man on Batman" into your googler.  There are several episodes of a podcast that is quite funny.  The episodes are streaming or for free download.  You'll be able to hear a fat man tear up over various scenes in the history of Batman.

In the near future, there will be debates over violence and our culture.  Something tells me the point will still be missed.

Thanks for listening.

Episode 27: This House Is A Rockin' So Don't Come A Knockin'

Greetings Dear Listener,

My apologies for the broadcast being a few days late.

I've been decking the halls and preparing for the coming onslaught that is the holiday season.

I've been wearing my Christmas helmet when going out of doors so I should be safe.

The recent venture to the record store for the Black Friday festivities was extremely fruitful.

The Nuggets compilation of 60's and 70's garage rock has been repressed on vinyl along with the first Thin Lizzy record.

The new Bob Mould record, Silver Age, was a pleasant surprise for the ears.

The recent Tenacious D release certainly contains a few laughs and has a rather humorous cover.

There will be plenty of new music in the episodes to come.  At least it'll be new to me.

Until next time.

Thanks for listening.

Episode 26: Hey, Wal-Mart. Go Gobble-Gobble Yourselves!!!

Happy Thanksgiving Dear Listener,

We've got a feast of twenty-five tracks laid out before us buffet style.

There's a bit of the old and a bit of the new and all of it quite filling for the soul.

I will be venturing out to see which Record Store Day releases I might be able to scrounge up.

I wil try to locate one of the "Bootleg" versions of the new Bad Brains record.  There were only 500 pressed so that search may be less than fruitful.

I hope you survived your holiday.

Thanks for listening.

Episode 25: Brains!!!

Greetings Dear Listener,

We have a belated celebration of Halloween this evening.

There are many treats and a few tricks in the mix so get out the bath salts, crack open a skull and have a heapin' helpin' of brains while you listen.

Satan sings us a Christmas carol and Bad Religion gives us a big "Fuck You."

That just happens to be the title of the first single off of their new album "True North."  It'll be released in mid-January and pre-orders are up.  Something about that song title tells me they have given up on any hopes for air-play in the world of Clear Channel.

The Blues Explosion pays us another visit.  Their show a few weeks ago was quite entertaining so we will give them another listen.  They walked out on stage, started playing and kept playing for over an hour.  Only stopping once or twice the entire time.

The Mark Of Cain and The Sword crash land upon us with songs off of their new records.  Both are worth your time and money to jam into your ears.

Roky Erickson and the Misfits were seemingly made for Halloween listening so we get a healthy dose of both.

November releases are looking promising.  Bad Brains, Forgetters and The Evens have new releases coming at us.  There are also Velvet Underground, Jawbreaker and Rage Against The Machine reissues out now or on the way.

The Black Friday mini-Record Store Day list is out.  There are a few interesting releases that might get me out of the house.

Everyone seems to have gone apeshit one way or the other over George Lucas selling Star Wars to Disney.

George Lucas dropped trou and crapped all over the story's legacy when he came up with Jar Jar and turned Darth Vader into a whiny little emo bitch.

My reaction was an unenthusiastic shrug of the shoulders.

Ever since the Ewoks, Lucas has been about nothing but selling toys and not about telling stories.  Disney was a perfect match.

Thankfully the election is over.  Now there's room in my brain for me to bitch about a worn out science fiction children's story being sold to a media conglomerate that makes a fortune subliminally selling sex to children.

I need a hobby.

And we're still doomed.

Thanks for listening.

Episode 24: Stop That Man!!! He Stole My Hearing!!!

Greetings Dear Listener,

Last night was the brain melting experience that is Dinosaur Jr.  It has been over twelve hours and my ears are still not right and they may never be again.

It was worth every minute.  They even dusted off a Deep Wound song towards the end of the set.

The playlist for the broadcast is Dinosaur Jr. (and Dinosaur Jr. related) heavy but it takes time to get back to "normal" after seeing that band.

The only musical downer was the opening act.  All I have to report is: the only Moog I care about played goal for the Bruins.  Not my cup of tea.  But then again, who am I on tour with?  They must be doing something right.

Tonight will be the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion at the Rex and Saturday will be Submachine with their annual Halloween show at the 31st St. Pub.

The musical planets have aligned around this town for once.  I should probably invest in a pair of earplugs.

Prepare yourselves for new Bad Brains and Forgetters next month.  This is the year that keeps on giving.  The only down side is if this year's releases were this abundant, will next year be lame?  We will have to wait to find out.

I hope this finds you well.

Thanks for listening.

Episode 23: Is That Burning Pants I Smell?

Greetings Dear Listener,

It is time again to embark on our musical journey.

At the start of the show, we make note of the issue that certain people in this country have with the truth or lack there of.

To paraphrase Bill Hicks:  Every time they open their mouths, it's like a turd falling into my drink.

The Mark Of Cain have finally decided on a release date.  November 2nd is the day.

Am I the only person that found the Russell Brand talk show to be completely unwatchable?  I will never unsee that.

Fall touring season is well underway.  Check your local papers and go see a show.

Until next time.

Episode 21: Judge Dredd? Again? Why?

Greetings Dear Listener,

It's that time again to ruin your hearing and sense of decency with twenty-five tracks of musical goodness.

Pay close attention to the line in Ashes In The Fall about factory and school doors closing while doors of the prison swing open to greet us.  If that grown-up frat boy from Wisconsin actually had a brain in his head, those words would have seeped in and maybe he wouldn't be so beholden to his corporate owners.  Tom Morello wrote a response to Paul Ryan that is quite entertaining.  If there was one guy I wouldn't want to get into the intellectual cross-hairs of, it would be Tom Morello.

Louis C.K. pays us a visit with some very true words about parenting these days.  Humanity is doomed.

We get our first entries from the Lux & Ivy's Favorites series.  I suggest doing yourself a favor and downloading all fifteen or so volumes.  They're free downloads so the price is right.

In honor of the handful of Quicksand reunion shows, we get into a bit of Manic Compression.

We also get a taste of the new Deerhoof.  If they are coming to your town, run don't walk to the venue. Scissors be damned.

And we celebrate the start of a new Steelers season with song about rape.

Next time we get together we will be unleashing new Dinosaur Jr., Ben Folds Five and Blues Explosion.  A good time will be had by all.

Thanks for listening.

Episode 20: This Meteorological Incident Is Brought To You By Satan

Dear Listener,

It is that time again.  We return to our normal program after our Joe Strummer celebration.

We go all over the place as we usually do on our musical adventure.

The Pussy Riot "verdict" came in and was as expected.  "Putin Lights Up The Fires" was the band's response.

Pre-orders for Dinosaur Jr and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion are up and include bundles that are filled with extra goodies.

With a certain party going on in Florida, I think it's appropriate that a hurricane landed in an attempt to flush the turds away.  Oh, well.

Thanks for listening.

Episode 19: Welcome To Strummerville

Greeting Dear Listener,

Put on your purple pants and get ready to tear your shirt as we turn green and Hulk through forty songs featuring the work of the late Joe Strummer.

August 21, 1952 was the day on which he was born and in honor of the man and his life we will rip through two and a half hours on what would have been Joe's sixtieth birthday.

The world became a greater place because of Joe Strummer and is greatly diminishing without his presence.

There isn't much more to say other than he is still missed after almost ten years.

Thanks for listening.

We pay tribute once more to the Russian punk band Pussy Riot.  They have been on "trial" in Moscow facing charges of hooliganism.  The "verdict" is supposed to come down on August 17th.  Something tells me it won't be good news.  Vlady's been a bad boy and he has a fit when people try to point that out.

Anti-Flag has been raising awareness and funds for Pussy Riot on their recent pass through Europe.  And we get a double dose of Anti-Flag along with a side project White Wives.

http://freepussyriot.org/  will get you more information.

There are a slew of songs off of recent releases that get a listen as well.  If anyone says that new music sucks, they're not looking in the right places.  Clear Channel will not offer you anything interesting or thought provoking.  Ever.

Thanks for listening.

Cazart.

Episode 17: Brought To You By Monolithic Oil

Greetings Dear Listener,

It's that special time of the month, again.

We sample a new Blues Explosion track this time time around.  There will be a new record and a tour in a few months.  Hooray.

The Damned and The Ruts begin and end our adventure.

There's a brief stop off in Los Angeles as well.  With the Germs, Black Flag, Social Distortion and Bad Religion.  Not in that order.

Ben Folds Five has a new record out in September so tonight we'll listen to something off of their first record.

Next time we get together we will delve into some of the new releases of the past few weeks.

Until then, keep your ears and mind open.

Thanks for listening.

Episode 16: Burning Down Companies For The Insurance Money Doesn't Mean You Can Be President

Dear Listener,

It is time to strap on your helmet and gird your loins.  Whatever that means.

You are about to be beaten about the ears with new Dinosaur Jr. and damn near fifteen minutes of True Widow.  Fifteen minutes may seem a bit lengthy to you for a single track but just wait for the time I go crazy enough to play Dopesmoker in the middle of the set.

We make a brief sonic stop in the godforsaken land of Texas for five tracks that bring some level of redemption to the land that used to be Mexico but has a problem with people from Mexico.  Go figure.

We also take time to salute the great Blake Schwartzenbach.  I've been on a Jawbreaker/Jets To Brazil kick of late and now you get to deal with it too.

If you haven't seen it yet, check out Black Dynamite.  The first episode was about Michael Jackson being an abusive alien from outer space.  Good times indeed.

Thanks for listening.

Episode 15: Hold On To Your Thumbs

It's that time again.

Hopefully you survived your Independence Day reverie and escaped with your thumbs and livers intact.

Nothing says freedom like blowing off a few fingers with a small explosive device while loaded on cheap booze.

We are twenty days away from the new Gaslight Anthem record "Handwritten."  Giddy with anticipation indeed.

We are twenty-seven days away from the new Toadies record as well.

Come August, the speakers will be sizzling.

Looking ahead, we will be playing a new Dinosaur Jr. song next time we get together.  Watch The Corners was streaming on the Rolling Stone website and that's how we've got it.

Hope all is well.

Thanks for listening.

Episode 14: The Hiatus Is OFF!

Greetings Dear Listener,

The time off is over.  I will try to post when I have an opportunity make up new playlists and get them recorded.

At the 31st Street Pub, on June 28th, Solar Burn will be playing.  Solar Burn is a band featuring two members of Crayon Death.  Doors are at 9pm.  They are opening for a band from Portland.  It should be a good night.

Dinosaur Jr. has announced the release date of their new record.  It's set for late September and a tour to go with it.  Hooray.

The Pussy Riot saga continues.  I do not see a positive outcome to that story.  I downloaded the safest looking tracks that I could find in order to play the four that close out the program.  I would have included their titles if I knew how to read them.

Anti-Flag has posted a cover of a Pussy Riot song on their website.  That's the song that wraps up the evening.

http://www.freepussyriot.org/  will get you more information.

Thanks for listening.

Episode Thirteen: The Hiatus Is On

Greetings Dear Listener,

It is time to convene for another sampling of twenty-five tracks.

After the Adam Yauch special edition, we will return to our regular programming.

This is the space I would have used to write some sort of review of the Rise Against show over the past weekend.  Unfortunately, I was not allowed to enter the venue due to my backpack.  Apparently the venue has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to backpacks.  I offered security the chance to search it since they were searching the over-sized purses of the female ticket holders but they declined.  I was told to take the bag back to my car.  Security found it odd when I told them I had taken public transit to the venue and had no car to put it in.

I was faced with the decision to either throw my bag and its contents in the trash or catch the next subway train back home.

The contents of said backpack were a notebook, two books and a pen.  I guess I would have been too dangerous sitting out of the way reading and writing between bands.

As big of a Rise Against fan as I am, they're not worth throwing away out of print books and a year's worth of writing.  Sorry.

Maybe next time I will guzzle $8.00 beers and start fights like the guys in wife-beaters and plaid cargo shorts instead of wanting to enrich myself through reading and writing.

Alien-boy swings and misses.  Again.

No one likes a thinker.

That's enough whining about what wasn't.  Let's talk about what is.

The Out of Step Music Hour will be going on hiatus after this episode.

I need a few weeks to digitize the giant box of records that has accumulated over the past few months.

Given the schedule and continually being kicked in the nards by life, a break seems to be necessary.

I can make time to record the show or record the vinyl but I don't have time to do both.  Something had to give.

I will use the time to track down new music and turn it into binary code for the computer to eat.

I will also try to find other methods of informing interested parties that this thing exists.  Word of mouth is nice but moving a bit slowly.

If anyone has any suggestions for music or marketing, feel free to send an email.

That's all for a while.

Thanks for listening.

Cazart.

Episode Yauch: He Was The King Of Boggle

There was none higher.  He caught eleven points off the word "quagmire."

On May 4th, 2012, the world lost Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys.

This is the closest thing to a tribute that I could put together.  Thirty Beastie Boys tracks with minimal talking.  I figure I'd stay out of the way and let the music do the talking.

We lost a great one.

Thanks for listening.

Episode Twelve: The Countdown to OFF! Is On

It's that time of the week for another assault on your aural and common senses.

The new OFF! record is less than a week away.  It is currently streaming on the SPIN magazine website.  After multiple listens, it is more of the same but what a same it is.

"45," the new Gaslight Anthem single is also streaming on the Rollingstone website.  July 24th is the day we can all do a happy dance because that is when Handwritten will be released.

Both SPIN and Rollingstone have outlived their relevance but they do serve their purposes from time to time.

Rise Against has a song on the Avengers Soundtrack.  Dirt and Roses is streaming on their website so save yourself the funds and take a listen for free.

The True Widow track in this episode came off of an e.p. titled I.N.O.  It was limited to 500 on vinyl but is available for download.  I.N.O. is another great five songs from True Widow.  It took the new OFF! to get me to stop listening to it.  Texas does have some redeeming value after all.

Thanks for listening.

Episode Eleven: D'oh!!!

Greetings Dear Listener,

Due to a series of unforeseen circumstances, there was no Record Store Day action for me.  But on the bright side, I did come across that elusive Hartford Whalers jersey I've been searching for for quite some time now.  Unfortunately, I am too old and slow to start playing hockey again.  Oh well.

Last week's post had an interestingly large amount of visitors.  My guess is the use of the words "free," "video" and "pussy" is what caused the traffic.  How sorely disappointed some folks must have been.  Maybe they should stop being lazy and use their imaginations from time to time.  Ha-ho.

Look for a new Toadies record in July.  The first single will be available for download in May.  There also seems to be some sort of Toadies/Helmet tour in the works.  It'll be like 1997 all over again.

There's not much else to report on so I'll keep this brief.

Thanks for listening.

Episode Ten: Free Pussy Riot!!!

No, Free Pussy Riot is not what occurs during some sort of odd door buster at a Wal-Mart in Nevada.  Pussy Riot is a Russian punk band that has been jailed for reasons that defy logic and reason in the year 2012.

Here are a few Pussy Riot associated links for more information:

New York Times Article

Free Pussy Riot.org

Another New York Times Article

There are also a few Pussy Riot videos on the Youtubes.

The human race is a curiously stupid animal.

There are two new OFF! songs posted on their website.  A video for the song Wiped Out is there as well.

http://offofficial.com/

May 8th is the official OFF! release date.  Giddy with anticipation indeed.

Record Store Day is almost upon us.  I will be all coffee'd up on Friday to participate in the Midnight Madness madness.  I'm sure I won't get half of the things on my list but it'll be worth it to witness the insanity.  If I remember correctly, there will be sandwiches.  Roast beef with Lemuria and a side of Horrible Crowes.

Not only is Saturday Record Store Day, it is also the 64th birthday of Iggy Pop.  Break out the Stooges records and turn it up to 11.  Iggy wasn't made from a mold, he was carved from stone.

That's all to report for now.

Episode Nine: Don't Sweat The Sweatervest

Once again, it is time for us to congregate around twenty-five songs of musical goodness.

Am I the only person that is bothered by beer ads?  They are nothing but miniature manuals on how to be a douche.

There are a few themes to be found in this playlist.  Something about sleep and having a nervous breakdown.  That seems to be right in my "wheel-house" as sportscasters are prone to say.

Point your googler toward the term "trans-vaginal ultrasound."  It is not the name of a Scandinavian metal band.  Chances are there is a law coming to a state legislature near you if not already.  To quote the great Greg Graffin, these are the new dark ages.

Hope everyone out there is doing well.

Thanks for stopping by.

Episode Eight: Neighborhood Watch Does Not Equal Batman

It is that time again, dear listener.

Refused will be playing a handful of shows in the US over the summer with OFF!.  Of course there is no Pittsburgh or Cleveland date so bad news for me.  Time to take out a loan and gas up the car.  I'm sure all of the local promoters passed on the show because they am dumb.

Enough griping.

George Carlin starts off this installment.  If there was ever a debate over the greatest master of language, George Carlin would be my choice.  To hell with Shakespeare and Dickens.

Screeching Weasel makes another appearance with "I Hate Led Zeppelin."  Page and Plant are thieves and should be treated as such.

Thanks for downloading.

Episode Seven: Picciotto Club Sandwich

Greetings dear listeners,

I hope this finds you well.

Here's the run down and other odds and ends for the seventh broadcast:

New High on Fire will be released on April 3rd.  If you are like me and can't wait to hear it, De Vermis Mysteriis is streaming in its entirety on that great home for heavy metal npr.org.

No joke, NPR is streaming the new High on Fire.  Wonders never cease.

I would suggest pre-ordering the vinyl for this one.  The sound coming off of the vinyl is something to behold with High on Fire.

I did notice the track listing is in a different order for the NPR stream than what is listed on Amazon for the official release.  I don't think it matters what order they put these tracks in because they are all good and they will all melt your brain.

Also on April 3rd, Tim from Rise Against will be gracing the cover of Alternative Press with an interview inside to go along with the glossy picture.

The new Off! record is available for pre-order as well.  Their web page will direct you to Interpunk if you'd like to get in line and wait for May 8th.  The 1,500 copies pressed on white vinyl have sold out but black vinyl always sounds better to me.  Less can go wrong with making the black pellets used for pressing.

There is a science to pressing vinyl that binary code just can't beat.

The list of US releases for Record Store Day 2012 has been made known.  I found it underwhelming and frustrating at the same time.  The "regional" releases and limited runs need to be stopped.  All those records will be on ebay by the end of the day and the people who actually like music get left out in the cold unless they want pay three times retail for them.

That's enough whining.

We make our first visit to the new Anti-Flag record tonight.  The General Strike is worth the funds in my opinion.

We also hear from my personal copilot, Bill Hicks.  The man was a genius and he is my hero.  If something needed said, by golly he'd say it.

Thanks for visiting.

Episode Six: Rest In Peace Michael Davis

Welcome to Episode Six.

I have just returned from seeing I Am The Avalanche play another impressive set.  I don't think I'll ever get tired of seeing that band hit a stage.

Through the power of a big as hell iced coffee and post-show giddiness, I will get this posted.

A few weeks ago, the world lost Michael Davis.  He was also known as the bass player for the MC5.  The significance of that band shouldn't need explanation.  We pay a small tribute to the man throughout this installment.

There is also a bit of comedic wretchedness included by way of one Mr. T.  If you can make it through listening to that track, you can go a long way in this life.

Here's a link to an article about horrible instances of rap music in pop culture.  Appropriation by the white man must cease.

The History of Horrible Rap Music In Popular Culture

The US list of releases for Record Store Day should be made known any day now.  If it's anything like the UK list, there really doesn't seem to be that much coming out.  The Refused releases are nice to see but The Shape of Punk To Come and Songs to Fan The Flames of Discontent were already available on the Epitaph website, last I checked.  So far, the Lemuria and Horrible Crowes singles are what will be getting me out of the house on April 21st.

But anyway.  Here's the link to the show:

Episode Five: We're Here To Make You Think About Death And Get Sad And Stuff

Greetings listeners.

Anti-Flag played their record release show this past Sunday.  The only thing I didn't like about their set was not enough new songs.  They only played two songs off of the new record.

The General Strike comes out on Tuesday, March 20th.  After repeated listens, I like what I hear.

The Flatliners were one of the opening acts.  I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy a band from Canada.  Not to speak disparagingly of my neighbors to the north but I always found Canadian music lacking that animal instinct.  I guess it's all of that clean air and health care they have that takes the piss and vinegar out of their music.  In my humble opinion, it's a fair trade-off.  Bare Naked Ladies and Alanis in exchange for not going bankrupt when illness strikes.

In addition to Anti-Flag, the release schedule for 2012 is starting to look promising.

OFF! will be releasing their second effort on May 8th.

The Gaslight Anthem have completed recording Handwritten which is set for a summer release.  This may turn out to be early fall given artwork layout and other post-production issues that always arise.

Rival Schools seems to be back to work.  Hopefully they can hold it together now that they are a three piece.

Dinosaur Jr. may have something new for us by the end of the year as well.

There is a bit of a theme to this episode.  It involves the film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.  Science fiction that movie was indeed.

Thanks for listening.

Episode Four: This Mayhem Is Electric

Greetings and welcome to Episode Four of the Out of Step Music Hour.

I hope this finds everyone well and that you've made it through your day in one piece.

We have added Russia, Germany, Norway, Sweden and Canada to the list of international visitors to this humble venture.  I hope you've all enjoyed the music so far.

Trying to get a new show posted every Wednesday seems to be working out for now.  I'm sure the pace may slow down at some point but I'll try to keep it up while I can.

There isn't much to report other than I am feeling old and lame for passing up shows on Sunday and Monday.  It was Matthew Pryor from the Get Up Kids on Sunday.  And Anti-Flag filming a basement show on Monday.  My legs hurt from kicking myself for missing both.

Thanks for stopping by, your listenership is greatly appreciated.

Episode Three: Google Santorum

If you point your Googler towards the word Santorum, interesting definitions come up.  I am ashamed that we both hail from the same town.  What an awful human being.

But on to the music because that's what matters.

Last summer, Dinosaur Jr. played a set at the 9:30 Club where they played the Bug album in it's entirety.  That show was filmed and has recently been released on DVD.  To the Amazon!!!

The audio for the show they played in Atlanta the night after, is posted on the Dinosaur Jr. download site, freesofree.net.  The interesting thing about the Atlanta show was Keith Morris taking over vocals on Don't.  Hooray!!!  Free So Free is free to sign up and offers endless hours of Dinosaur Jr. and related projects.

I would also like to take a moment to welcome our international listeners in Finland and the United Kingdom.  I hope you enjoy the show and feel free to pass the link around.

As this operation is mostly a word of mouth type thing, any help spreading the show out is greatly appreciated.

Bands possibly coming through your town:

Anti-Flag (The General Strike record release shows)
I Am The Avalanche
Henry Rollins
Social Distortion with the Toadies opening (seems to only be on the West Coast)
Rise Against (seems to be playing everywhere)
Matthew Pryor (singer for the Get Up Kids)

Episode Two: This Machine Kills Mediocrity

Hazzah!!!  Technical issues resolved!!!  Possibly.

I hope this finds everyone well.  The download link and the playlist are posted below.  This episode is a better sampling of what future broadcasts may have in store than the initial offering.

There are a few repeat performances from episode one but to quote the late R.D. Summers, "They sang it so nice, we'll let them sing twice."

And please keep in mind, we are surrounded by mediocre bastards and the circle is tightening.

Cazart.

Episode One Of The Out Of Step Music Hour

Here is the link to the inaugural broadcast of the Out of Step Music Hour.  This first playlist was put together in tribute to the record store that I had frequented for the past 15 years.  Wicked Discs/Brave New World closed its doors for the last time recently and has left quite a void in my normal activities.  I could think of no other way of honoring the store than by playing some music that ended up in my speakers because of them.

Have no fear.  Future playlists may not be nearly as daunting and oppressive, we'll see where the music takes it.

Thanks for downloading and listening.
